A comprehensive data analysis has revealed why Major League Soccer and European clubs are increasingly targeting South African players, with the findings painting a remarkable picture of the Premier Soccer League’s athletic superiority.
According to SkillCorner, the research, which examined 41 global competitions, positioned the PSL 11th globally for physicality, crucially, ahead of MLS at 13th and closing in on Europe’s top 10.
The United States has emerged as the most common destination for South African players according to the CIES Atlas of Migration as of May 2026, with Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s move from Orlando Pirates to Chicago Fire in December 2025 serving as the blueprint for what is expected to become a major talent pipeline.

SkillCorner’s Physicality Matrix, which splits physical data into five branches (Coverage, Agility, Speed, Explosiveness and Intensity), showed the PSL ranks first globally for High Accelerations and Decelerations, with only the Premier League bettering South Africa’s output for Explosive Accelerations to High-Speed Running.

This summer, Belgian giants Royale Union Saint-Gilloise signed Relebohile Mofokeng from Pirates for a South African record €3.5 million (R65 Million), while RSC Charleroi recruited Golden Arrows teenager Isaac Ismaël Cissé. Scandinaa midfielder Thapelo Maseko from Mamelodi Sundowns for €1.5 million (R27 million)
