CAF’s R1.7m Continental Support For PSL Clubs

South African clubs competing in CAF’s interclub competitions this season have an added financial incentive should their continental campaigns come to an early end.

CAF has confirmed that every club eliminated during the preliminary rounds of its interclub competitions will receive USD100,000 (approximately R1.7 million) in financial support to assist with travel and other logistical costs.

The amount forms part of CAF’s continued efforts to ease the financial demands placed on clubs competing across the continent.

For the PSL clubs involved in this season’s CAF competitions, the support could prove particularly significant given the costs associated with continental football.

SA’s Continental Representatives

Orlando Pirates are representing South Africa in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, while Kaizer Chiefs and Durban City are competing in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.

Pirates begin their campaign in the first preliminary round, with the Buccaneers travelling to Mauritius to face La Cure Waves this weekend.

The Confederation Cup representatives will also begin their respective continental journeys in the preliminary rounds, meaning the CAF support will be relevant to them should they be eliminated at this stage.

The payment is not a prize for winning or progressing in the competition, but rather financial assistance intended to help clubs cover some of the costs associated with their participation.

CAF’s announcement comes as the 2026/27 interclub season gets underway, with clubs from across Africa preparing for lengthy journeys and demanding schedules in pursuit of continental success.

The Longer the Journey, the Greater the Reward

The financial demands of competing in CAF competitions have long been a consideration for clubs, particularly those required to travel across different regions of the continent for away matches.

For the PSL representatives, however, the first objective remains progressing as far as possible.

The longer their continental campaigns continue, the greater the sporting rewards, while the USD100,000 support is specifically aimed at those whose journeys come to an end during the preliminary rounds.

Mamelodi Sundowns, meanwhile, will not be involved in the opening round.

The defending CAF Champions League champions have received a bye into the second preliminary round and will therefore begin their title defence at a later stage.
