Former Swallows Midfielder Eager For PSL Return

After a difficult time last season recovering from a knee injury, promising midfielder Mkhuseli Rampa is ready to make a return to professional football and he’s putting in the work to make it happen.

A Devastating Setback

The versatile midfielder from KwaThema in the east of Johannesburg was last on the books of Marumo Gallants in the 2024/25 season, having been with Moroka Swallows before that. But an injury he sustained in November 2024 has kept the 23-year-old out of the game for some time.

Rampa opened up to Soccer Laduma about the circumstances surrounding his injury, revealing that he was playing in the DStv Diski Challenge at the time due to issues beyond his control.

“The injury I got was before I left Marumo Gallants, in November 2024. I was not playing in the first team because there were issues of money, so I was in the DDC team. I would just go myself to the DDC and play. I got that injury while I was at training, and I didn’t think it was something big,” Rampa said.

Road to Recovery

“Fortunately, there is a guy who works at a hospital here at home and he helped me. I went for an operation and I attended physiotherapy which was provided by the hospital and I was doing extra work. I didn’t rush myself. I wanted to come back last season in January, but I could see I was rushing myself. I spoke to my agent and he also agreed that I should not rush myself. Now I am ready,” he added.

Keeping Fit With Free Agents

During his time on the sidelines, Rampa found a creative way to maintain his fitness by training with a group of unattached professionals.

“I was training with a team here at home called Free Agents. It’s ex-professionals who don’t have teams. We played friendlies against teams such as Leicesterford and Pele Pele to keep myself fit.”

A Return Could Be Imminent

Rampa has been actively working on making a return and it’s probably only a matter of time before he finds himself at a new club, which would give him an opportunity to showcase his talent at a professional level. He’s recently been assessed by Kruger United and his former club Gallants, and it seems there are positive signs of getting a club soon.

“Getting an opportunity to be in the PSL again will mean a lot to me, and I will make sure I grab the opportunity with both hands and go all out for the club I join and make sure that I achieve more. It will change my entire life.”
