Is Ashish Nehra Interested in Coaching India? IPL-Winning Coach Has Blunt Answer
Team India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir’s job has come under the scrutiny in the wake of many new depths that Indian cricket has fallen to. Despite winning two ICC titles and having a shot at winning two more, there has been lots of chatter about replacing Gambhir. One such candidate is former India batter VVS Laxman, and another name doing the rounds is ex-India pacer Ashish Nehra.
Ashish Nehra as GT Coach
Nehra is currently the coach of IPL side GT and helped them win the title in 2022, in what was their first season. He also played a role in finishing runners-up in 2023 and 2026. But the man himself admitted that he has no admission about coaching India as he did not make any such plans. But Nehra has not shut the door as he said he would be honoured if he got the chance. The former fast bowler also joked that he would need to take permission from his wife or else he would get a divorce.

“First things first, I will not use the word ambition. I never plan. Yes, it will be a great honour and a privilege, but I never plan things like that. We’ll see in the future. No, no ambition. I’m very happy where I am,” he said while speaking at the Cricket Association of Bengal’s (CAB) annual awards ceremony.
“When it comes to GT, lots of people say, ‘you have done well in coaching’. It’s not me; it’s about the team. Yes, when your captain, when your coach is always associated, that’s the way it goes, especially in India, but I’m dead against it,” he added.
“It’s very difficult to answer right now. First things first, I’ll have to check with the High Commission, which is my wife. Otherwise, I’ll get a divorce. It’s a travelling thing, which comes in eight or nine months. Not easy,” he continued.
“When it comes to international cricket, not too many people have done more than 3-4 years… the kinds of demands, the kinds of travelling,” he went on to say.
Ashish Nehra’s Report Card
Nehra played for India from 1999 to 2017, but his career was plagued with injuries. He was part of the squad that won the 2011 ODI World Cup and shared the 2002 Champions Trophy. He was also part of the side that made it to the 2003 ODI World Cup final. In 2003, he was also part of the Indian team that won its first Test in Australia after more than two decades. Nehra was also a member of the SRH squad that won IPL 2016.

Based on his IPL record, Nehra would make a good coach without a doubt. It remains to be seen if he is actually considered for the job when Gambhir’s tenure ends, or even before that. It will be a whole new role for the former pacer.
