Dean Elgar scored a century for Essex against Surrey only two days after announcing his retirement from professional cricket.
The 39-year-old made 113 from 191 deliveries, striking 14 fours and one six during another determined performance at Chelmsford.

Elgar came to the crease after Surrey had been dismissed for 183. He watched opening partner Paul Walter depart with the score on nine before helping Essex recover.
The South African added 111 for the third wicket with Charlie Allison, who contributed 43. Mahipal Lomror eventually dismissed Elgar with Essex on 218-4.
It was Elgar’s 56th first-class century.
Rahul Chahar claimed 6-80 as Essex were dismissed for 279, giving them a 96-run first-innings lead.
Essex then reduced Surrey to 51-4 before the end of day two. Simon Harmer removed openers Dom Sibley and Rory Burns as the visitors finished 45 runs behind.
Elgar announced on Wednesday that he will retire at the conclusion of the 2026 season, ending a professional career spanning 21 years.
He represented South Africa in 86 Tests, scoring 5,347 runs and 14 centuries before retiring from international cricket in January 2024.
