Big Bash League clubs will reportedly no longer be required to sign overseas players as part of a major overhaul designed to give teams greater flexibility and ensure Australia’s top talent is properly rewarded.
In one of the biggest changes to the competition’s list management rules in recent years, clubs will be permitted to build squads consisting entirely of Australian players if they choose.

According to CODE Sports, Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association have agreed to a series of changes aimed at helping clubs retain leading Australian players, attract higher-quality international talent and prevent mid-tier overseas recruits commanding inflated salaries.
The BBL overseas player draft, which was introduced in 2022, is also set to be formally scrapped under the new rules.
The changes come as the BBL continues to battle increasingly lucrative rival T20 competitions around the world for both Australian and international talent.

CODE Sports reports the move is partly designed to address concerns from leading Australian players who felt they were being underpaid relative to some international recruits.

According to CODE Sports, the top six players on each club’s list for the coming BBL season must be paid a combined minimum of $1.7 million, with three local players required to earn at least $212,242.
The salary cap itself will not increase beyond what was already mandated under the existing memorandum of understanding between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association.

CODE Sports reports the top four players at each BBL club will be required to earn at least $1.4 million combined, with at least two of those players required to be Australian.
Similar mechanisms will also be introduced in the WBBL, albeit at lower salary levels.
Another change will provide clubs with some salary-cap relief when contracted players are released with their permission.

The overhaul arrives after BBL clubs spent more than six months unable to sign players during an extended embargo period, which is due to end on Thursday.
