- MS Dhoni IPL 2027 Future: Wants Full Time Wicketkeeping Role | No Impact Player

MS Dhoni has told former Chennai Super Kings batter Subramaniam Badrinath that he does not wish to continue playing as an Impact Player. This has further increased the uncertainty surrounding his participation in the 2027 Indian Premier League.
The Impact Player rule could have reduced the workload for the 45-year-old Dhoni, potentially allowing him to extend his IPL career. However, Dhoni has made it clear that if he continues to play, he wants to remain a full-time wicketkeeper.

Dhoni shared the decision with Badrinath himself
Badrinath stated that at this stage of his career, the Impact Player role could have been suitable for Dhoni, given his limited involvement in batting and the physical demands of wicketkeeping for 20 overs.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said, “He has personally told me that he will not play as an Impact Player. He considers himself a full-time wicketkeeper, which means he would have to be on the field for the entire 20 overs.”
Badrinath said, “He will not play as an Impact Player, but I think if he does so, it will give CSK a strategic advantage.”
‘He bats after the 16th over’: Subramaniam Badrinath
Badrinath said that Dhoni’s body cannot handle this for a long time. He added that CSK coach Stephen Fleming has also said this.
He said, “He is only going to bat after the 16th over and will also do wicketkeeping. When his involvement is so limited, he would be ideal as an Impact Player.”
Badrinath believes that the Impact Player rule can reduce Dhoni’s workload. This would also allow CSK to utilise his experience and finishing ability.
Decision on Dhoni’s return in IPL 2027 still pending
Dhoni has been struggling with fitness-related issues for the past few seasons. His future in the IPL remains a subject of discussion and speculation.
However, because Dhoni prefers to remain a wicketkeeper, CSK may have to wait to know whether their long-time captain will return for the next season.
Notably, Dhoni has led CSK to five IPL titles. He stepped down from captaincy before the 2024 season, and since then, his role with the bat has been limited.
