The BCCI has once again opened the debate over the Impact Player rule in the IPL, seeking feedback from all franchises ahead of the 2027 season.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, the BCCI has asked IPL teams to discuss the rule with their cricket operations departments and submit their combined feedback by August 31.

The development is important because the Impact Player rule had earlier been confirmed to remain in place until the IPL 2027 season.

BCCI asks IPL teams for feedback

The BCCI’s latest communication was not limited to the Impact Player rule. The board has also sought feedback on several cricket-related matters, including umpiring, practice sessions, playing conditions and match-day operations.

The request follows discussions at the IPL 2026 captains’ meeting, where a majority of franchise captains reportedly expressed concerns about the Impact Player rule.

The BCCI’s mail, as quoted by Cricbuzz, asked franchises to discuss the listed topics with their cricket operations teams and send their consolidated feedback.

What is the Impact Player rule in IPL?

The Impact Player rule was introduced in the IPL in 2023. Under the rule, each team can replace one player during a match with a substitute from its list of nominated players.

The replacement player gets the same rights as a regular player and can bat, bowl and field. The rule has given teams more tactical options during matches. It has also allowed teams to make changes based on the situation of the game.

The BCCI’s decision to seek feedback does not mean that the Impact Player rule has been removed. The rule remains part of the IPL regulations for now.
