The Indian men’s cricket team is scheduled to play a historic first-ever men’s T20 International (T20I) against the Japanese men’s cricket team on the 22nd of September, 2026. The match has been scheduled as part of the Suzuki Cup at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. This will mark the first time a senior men’s Indian cricket team will face Japan on the international stage, as well as Japan’s first-ever senior men’s international match against an ICC Full Member nation. This match is also important as this is a part of the “Sport 75”, an initiative taken by both of the countries.
The match is not just a sporting fixture but a headline celebration launching the 75th anniversary of India-Japan Diplomatic Relations. This match will mark the beginning of “Sport 75”, a bilateral initiative born out of a summit agreement between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This innovative initiative will aim in deepening cultural ties and people-to-people exchanges through sports, especially as India is looking forward to bidding for being the hosts of the Olympic Games in 2036. The match takes place right on the eve of the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. For the defending champions, this match will serve as a direct practice match before entering the tournament at the quarter-final stage. Ranked 41st in the world, the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) sees this as a landmark opportunity to test their developing squad against a world-class opposition. Bringing Team India to new territories helps popularise cricket across East Asia ahead of the sport’s inclusion at the Los Angeles Olympics.

“This is a significant moment for cricket, as it takes the Indian team to new territory and provides an opportunity to introduce the sport to a wider audience in Japan and East Asia. India and Japan share a strong and longstanding relationship and friendship, and we are pleased that cricket will be part of the celebrations marking 75 years of bilateral relations between the two countries. The BCCI believes that the growth of cricket must extend beyond its traditional territories, and as the world’s largest cricket board, we recognise our responsibility to contribute to that growth” BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said.
JCA CEO Naoki Miyaji also described the importance of this game and what it means for the future of cricket in Japan. “To be able to invite the reigning World Champions to the home of cricket in Japan is a landmark moment for our association. We greatly look forward to welcoming the passion of Indian cricket fans, and we actively encourage any local Japanese people curious about cricket to come and cheer on our team in what will be a truly memorable occasion” he said.
