She achieved a remarkable feat by taking 3 wickets without conceding a single run, the first Indian cricketer to do so in a Women’s T20I match. Her bowling figures of 3/0 are also the most economical three-wicket haul by an Indian in Women’s T20I history, surpassing Renuka Singh’s previous best of 3/5 against Sri Lanka in Sylhet in 2022.
Sharma’s spell was instrumental in restricting Thailand’s batting
Sharma’s spell was instrumental in restricting Thailand’s batting line-up, contributing significantly to India’s strong start in the Asia Cup.
With 171 wickets, she now leads the list of highest wicket-takers in Women’s T20Is, followed closely by Thipatcha Putthawong (170), Rwanda’s Henriette Ishimwe (164), England’s Sophie Ecclestone (154) and Hong Kong’s Kary Chan (153).
Overall, there have been 26 instances in Women’s T20I cricket of bowlers taking three or more wickets without conceding a run, but Sharma is the first Indian to join this group.
In the match, India posted 159 for 9
In the match, India posted 159 for 9 thanks to a 64-run innings from Shafali Verma off 36 balls, which included eight fours and three sixes. Despite a late batting collapse, India set a challenging target.
Thailand’s chase was hindered by regular breakthroughs from the Indian bowling attack, resulting in the team being bowled out for 65 in 16.1 overs. Alongside Sharma’s 3/0, Nandni Sharma claimed 3/18 and Shree Charani took 2/10, showcasing India’s dominance in spin bowling.
For Thailand, Nannapat Koncharoenkai was the top scorer with 41 runs from 48 balls, but the team’s total was insufficient to challenge India’s total.
India is scheduled to face Hong Kong Women on September 3.
