Cricket: Nigeria thrash Malawi by 94 runs - Realnews Magazine

JUNIOR Female Yellow Greens on Monday defeated Malawi by 94 runs to record their second consecutive victory at the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier Division One in Tanzania.

Nigeria, who opened their campaign with a four-wicket victory over Uganda on Sunday, produced a dominant all-round performance to strengthen their position in the competition.

Malawi won the toss and elected to bowl, with Nigeria posting 152 for seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs.

Shola Adekunle top-scored for Nigeria with 32 runs off 27 balls, including five boundaries.

Teammate Omosigho Eguakun also scored 26 runs from 19 balls, while Beauty Oguai also contributed 26 off 28 deliveries, with four boundaries.

Nigeria captain Christabel Chukwuonye added a brisk 20 runs off 12 balls, including two fours and a six.

Inyene Umoh contributed 17 runs from 14 deliveries as late contributions from Jennifer Godwin and Jessica Bieni helped Nigeria surpass the 150-run mark.

Malawi, in reply, struggled against Nigeria’s disciplined bowling attack and were bowled out for 58 runs in 18.3 overs.

Godwin produced the most impressive bowling figures, taking four wickets for five runs in 2.3 overs.

Adekunle capped an outstanding all-round performance with two wickets for four runs in four overs, including a maiden.

Nigeria’s Anointed Akhigbe also claimed two wickets for 10 runs in three overs as Nigeria dismantled the Malawian batting line-up.

Sphiwe Frank top-scored for Malawi with 24 runs, while compatriot Shavon Akileni made 14.

Adekunle was named Player of the Match for her all-round performance of 32 runs and two wickets for four runs.

The victory gives Nigeria back-to-back wins after two matches in the qualifier.

The Junior Female YellowGreens will next face hosts Tanzania on Sept. 2 as they continue their quest for qualification for the U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
