’12 Ships Attacked’: UK’s Big Reveal On Hormuz Escalation; Iran Steps Up Offensive In Gulf Waterway
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has warned that attacks on commercial vessels in the Middle East may be going underreported, as maritime security concerns continue to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. In its latest update published on October 16, UKMTO reported 12 attacks during the latest weekly reporting period, including 10 in the Strait of Hormuz, one in the Gulf and one in the Gulf of Oman. Of the vessels involved, one was lost and two were disabled or left unable to manoeuvre, while the outcomes of three incidents remained unconfirmed. UKMTO said many vessels were not reporting attacks directly to the agency, making it difficult to establish the true scale of the incidents. Meanwhile, combined inbound and outbound transits through the strategic waterway remain around 70% below pre-war levels. The warning underscores the continuing uncertainty surrounding maritime security and global energy shipments through one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.
