Afghanistan Premier League returns after 8 years, set to start on December 27

The Afghanistan Premier League (APL) is set to make its long-awaited return on December 27, with the franchise-based T20 competition resuming after an eight-year gap. The tournament’s first edition was held in the United Arab Emirates in 2018, with five teams competing in the inaugural season.The 2018 edition featured Kabul Zwanan, Balkh Legends, Kandahar Knights, Nangarhar Leopards and Paktia Panthers.

Balkh Legends, led by Mohammad Nabi, defeated Kabul Zwanan by four wickets in the final to become the inaugural champions, while Rashid Khan was named Player of the Tournament.Also Read: Afghanistan vs India T20I series media rights given to Pakistan companyThe revived league will feature a new-look franchise structure, with Axcel United Kabul, Balkh Zwanan and Kandahar Warriors confirmed as the first three franchises.

The ACB has said the process of finalising the remaining franchises is ongoing.KOH-E-ZAFAR TROPHY TO HEADLINE APL COMEBACKThe return of the APL has also brought a new piece of silverware, with the league unveiling the Koh-E-Zafar trophy, meaning “Mountain of Victory”. The trophy was unveiled alongside the confirmation of the three franchises at a ceremony in Dubai on Wednesday.ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf called the development a significant milestone for Afghan cricket, saying the league is gradually taking shape and that its second edition will feature both Afghan and international players.”Today is a landmark occasion for Afghan cricket.

The unveiling of our inaugural franchises and the Koh-E-Zafar trophy reflects our shared vision of building a league that inspires future generations. The three franchises have also outlined ambitions centred around developing local talent and building strong connections with their respective regions,” Ashraf said.The player registration and draft process is also set to begin soon, with the registration portal scheduled to open on August 30 and the player draft planned for September 27.

Details of the venues and the complete schedule are expected to be announced once the remaining franchise selections are completed.The inaugural APL attracted several international stars in 2018, including Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Shahid Afridi, Andre Russell and Mohammad Hafeez.
