Chennai Super Kings to Enter IPL 2027 Without a Dedicated Batting Coach as Kasi Viswanathan Confirms Zaheer Khan’s New Coaching Strategy
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have announced a significant change to their coaching structure ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season. The five-time champions will begin their next campaign without appointing a dedicated batting coach, with CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirming that the decision was taken by newly appointed head coach Zaheer Khan. The development follows a major overhaul of the franchise’s support staff as the team prepares for a fresh start.
The decision has attracted attention because batting support has been an important part of CSK’s success over the years. With several changes taking place behind the scenes, the franchise will now look to establish a new coaching structure and improve its performance in the upcoming season.
Kasi Viswanathan Explains CSK’s Decision for IPL 2027
Kasi Viswanathan has confirmed that the coaching staff for IPL 2027 is complete and that the franchise does not plan to appoint a specialist batting coach.
According to reports, Viswanathan told Sportstar that the announced coaching team would form the backroom staff for the upcoming campaign. He also clarified that the decision not to appoint a batting coach came from Zaheer Khan.
CSK have not ruled out providing additional batting
However, CSK have not ruled out providing additional batting guidance to their players. The management is exploring the possibility of using assistant coach Gareth Batty as a batting mentor. Discussions on this arrangement are ongoing, and a final confirmation about his responsibilities would be needed.
This approach could allow the franchise to distribute coaching responsibilities among its existing staff rather than appointing another specialist.
Zaheer Khan Takes Charge of CSK’s New Coaching Strategy
The appointment of Zaheer Khan as head coach marks a new chapter for Chennai Super Kings. The former Indian fast bowler was brought in for IPL 2027 after Stephen Fleming’s long association with the franchise came to an end.
Fleming had been associated with CSK as head coach since 2009, helping the team build a reputation for consistency, experienced leadership and a stable support system. His departure represents a major change for a franchise that has traditionally relied on continuity.
Zaheer now faces the challenge of building
Zaheer now faces the challenge of building a competitive team and establishing his own coaching philosophy. His decision to proceed without a designated batting coach suggests that the new management is considering a different way of organising its backroom operations.
Whether this strategy delivers results will become clearer once the team begins preparations for the tournament.
Michael Hussey’s Departure Marks the End of an Era
One of the biggest developments behind the coaching changes is the departure of Michael Hussey, who served as CSK’s batting coach from 2018.

Hussey was an important member of the franchise, having contributed both as a player and as a coach. During his coaching tenure, Chennai won IPL titles in 2018, 2021 and 2023. His experience and understanding of the team’s environment made him a familiar presence in the dressing room.
His exit, alongside the departure of Fleming and other members of the previous support staff, signals a substantial restructuring ahead of IPL 2027.

There had been speculation about potential replacements, including former CSK players Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu. However, Viswanathan’s latest comments indicate that the franchise is not planning to appoint a dedicated batting coach at this stage.
CSK’s Updated Coaching Staff for IPL 2027
Chennai Super Kings have introduced several changes to their coaching department as they prepare for the new season.
The announced structure includes:
Gareth Batty: Assistant coach, with a possible additional role as batting mentor under discussion
Sridharan Sriram: Assistant coach
This revamped setup combines former international cricketers with coaching experience from different cricketing environments. The franchise will hope that the revised support team can help improve player development, tactical planning and overall consistency.
Can Chennai Super Kings Succeed Without a Specialist
Can Chennai Super Kings Succeed Without a Specialist Batting Coach?
The biggest question surrounding CSK’s IPL 2027 preparations is whether the team can maintain its batting standards without a dedicated batting coach.
T20 cricket demands adaptability, quick decision-making and the ability to handle different bowling strategies. Batters must adjust to changing pitch conditions, pressure situations and opposition plans throughout the tournament.
Although a specialist batting coach can provide focused technical guidance, the absence of one does not automatically mean that a team’s batting performance will suffer. Much will depend on the responsibilities assigned to the existing coaching staff, the experience of the players and the quality of preparation before matches.
If Gareth Batty takes on a batting mentorship
If Gareth Batty takes on a batting mentorship role, his contribution could become an important part of the new setup. However, the precise arrangement remains under discussion.
For Zaheer Khan, the challenge will be to ensure that the coaching structure works effectively and that the players receive the support they need throughout the season.
While the absence of a dedicated batting coach has raised questions, CSK could address the requirement through its existing staff if the proposed batting mentorship arrangement moves forward.
Ultimately, the success of this strategy will depend
Ultimately, the success of this strategy will depend on performances on the field. Chennai Super Kings will aim to rebuild consistency, strengthen their approach and compete for another IPL title under their new head coach.
