Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has named Sachin Tendulkar as the greatest Indian cricketer while making unexpected selections in a recent all-time Indian cricket team. In a video by Cricinfo, Ashwin was tasked with choosing India’s best 16 cricketers of all time.
During the round of 16, Ashwin selected Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Kapil Dev, and Virender Sehwag over Vijay Hazare, Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, and Sunil Gavaskar respectively. On the other half of the draw, he chose MS Dhoni over Ravindra Jadeja despite admitting a temptation to back his spin bowling partner. Rahul Dravid, Jasprit Bumrah, and Sourav Ganguly were also preferred over Vinoo Mankad, Anil Kumble, and Ashwin himself.

In the quarterfinals, Ashwin picked Tendulkar over Ganguly and Kapil Dev over Dravid. He caused further surprises by selecting Sehwag over Dhoni, and Bumrah over Kohli. Dhoni’s omission was notable, considering his 17,000-plus international runs, leadership in all ICC trophies, and tenure as India’s number one Test captain. Kohli’s exclusion was also unexpected, given his 28,000-plus runs, 85 centuries, and key role in five ICC trophies with India.

He was also the fastest to 18,000 ODI runs, achieving the milestone in 440 innings, ending with 18,426 runs and 49 centuries. Tendulkar holds records for most Player of the Match awards (76), most fifties (264), most nineties (28), and most fours (4,076) across all formats.
