Indian left-handed opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has been fined 25% of their match fees and handed one demerit point by the International Cricket Council (ICC) due to his heated on-field actions against Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando on Day 1 of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Fernando has also been fined 25% of his match fees for the incident.
Jaiswal has escaped a suspension but has been handed a hefty fine following his altercation with Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando. Jaiswal appeared to headbutt the SL pacer after being provoked following his dismissal. The ICC has slapped a fine of 25 per cent of their match fee, which amounts to ₹3.75 Lakh after both players admitted of breaching the Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct that deals with inappropriate physical contact between players.

The incident occurred during the 17th over of India’s first innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal for 45. The Lankan pacer gave the batter an animated send-off which resulted in Jaiswal turning back and exchanging words with him. The confrontation quickly escalated as the two players came face-to-face. Fernando moved his head forward while Jaiswal leaned in, resulting in their helmets and heads making contact. Teammates and Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva intervened and separated the two players before the situation could escalate further.
Jaiswal’s banter in the first Test
Yashasvi Jaiswal engaged in a similar controversial encounter in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. During the fifth day of the match, Jaiswal threw a banter at Sri Lankan batter Niroshan Dickwella. The stump-mic banter audio went viral where Jaiswal was found to instigate Dickwella constantly to hit an over boundary in the square leg direction reminding him of his first-innings form. Dickwella joked back by saying “take me to IPL, I will hit six” and then Jaiswal assured him that he would definitely take him to IPL if he hits a six. Following the banter, Dickwella ultimately edged his wicket to Rishabh Pant in the very next over of Prasidh Krishna.
Indian players who have been fined in the past
Several prominent Indian cricketers have been fined by the ICC over the years for breaching the code of conduct. The cricketers include Arshdeep Singh who was penalized by the ICC during the T20 World Cup for an aggressive throw back at the batter during a match against New Zealand, Suryakumar Yadav who was fined 30% of his match fee by the ICC for his political commentary in an Asia Cup match, Sachin Tendulkar who was fined 75 percent of his match fee and handed a suspended ban during a 2001 tour of South Africa after being accused by match referee Mike Denness of changing the condition of the ball and Virendra Sehwag was fined 75 percent of his match fee alongside a one-Test ban during the same 2001 South African series for excessive dissent and charging toward the umpire.
