5 BBL teams in which Virat Kohli might fit the best if he is given a chance ever to take part in the highly decorated Australian league. The first match of the 2026-27 BBL is set to be held in Chepauk, India, marking the first-ever BBL to be played outside Australia.
The Big Bash League (BBL) has long been one of the premier and popular franchise T20 tournaments in the world which is renowned for its packed stadiums, high-octane atmosphere and Australian pitches that offer a tough contest between bat and ball. Several global superstars have graced the tournament over the years but the absence of active Indian players due to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) policies, has remained the ultimate “what if” for cricket fans. At the top of that wishlist sits the Indian legend Virat Kohli. As a modern-day titan of T20 cricket, Kohli’s technical mastery against pace, elite running between the wickets and unmatched ability to anchor a high-pressure chase would make him a prized asset for any Australian franchise.
The next season of the Big Bash League, BBL 16, will start on December 12, 2026, and end with the final on January 26, 2027. The opening match breaks major ground by being played at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, India, marking the first time a BBL match will be hosted outside of Australia. The Perth Scorchers are the defending champions after defeating the Sydney Sixers by 6 wickets in the 2025–26 final to lift their record-extending sixth title.
The BCCI protects the commercial exclusivity and dominance of the Indian Premier League (IPL) by restricting top-tier Indian stars from playing abroad which they think would dilute the unique value of the IPL. Under current regulations, an Indian player must completely retire from all forms of international and domestic cricket, including the IPL and should also avoid the BCCI contracts before obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to play in foreign leagues. R. Ashwin has played the BBL in 2025 for the Sydney Thunders after completing the required formalities. The teams in which Kohli could have potentially played in the BBL are:-
Melbourne Stars
The Melbourne Stars are historically known as a glamorous franchise of the BBL as they continue to draw massive crowds. The team has frequently suffered from middle-order collapses and a lack of a determined player who can anchor the innings. Kohli is the world’s premier anchor. If the team includes him at Number 3 or 4, that would provide a strength to the middle order, allowing explosive overseas finishers to play with total freedom around him. The Stars play their games at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The MCG features massive square boundaries where clear-the-rope hitting is incredibly difficult. This environment facilitates swift running between the wickets and accurate gap-finding which are the two superpowers of Kohli. Furthermore, Kohli has a legendary love affair with the MCG due to his most famous and historic, unbeaten 82 against Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup. He knows exactly how to construct an innings on this specific turf.
Perth Scorchers
The Perth Scorchers are the most successful franchise in BBL history. While the Scorchers usually rely on their lethal bowling attack, their batting lineup occasionally lacks a global marquee anchor capable of neutralizing elite spin or steadying the ship during an early top-order collapse. Kohli’s presence would turn an already elite team into an unstoppable juggernaut. His fierce, uncompromising will to win perfectly mirrors the Scorchers’ team culture. The Optus Stadium (Perth Stadium) pitch is renowned for its high bounce and searing pace. Throughout his international career, Kohli has been one of the finest subcontinent batters against extreme bounce, utilizing a watertight back-foot game and an immaculate cover drive. He would thrive on the true bounce of the Perth deck.
Adelaide Strikers
The Adelaide Strikers own one of the most passionate fan bases in the country. The Strikers have occasionally leaned too heavily on individual brilliance at the top of the order. When their openers fail, the middle order can look exposed. Kohli at Number 3 stabilizes the entire batting card, acting as a tactical bridge to the power-hitters later in the order. Moreover, there is no ground in Australia more synonymous with Virat Kohli than the Adelaide Oval. It is his self-proclaimed favorite venue outside of India. Kohli scored his maiden Test century here in 2012, twin centuries as captain in 2014 and has scored heavily across all formats at the venue. The short square boundaries at Adelaide make his trademark flick off the pads and punch through cover incredibly lethal.
Sydney Sixers
Sydney Sixers are built on tactical intelligence, veteran experience and a highly structured approach to T20 cricket. The Sixers pride themselves on winning close games, executing defensive bowling strategies and chasing down totals with ease. Kohli is widely regarded as the greatest chase-master in the history of white-ball cricket so his ability to calculate required run rates, manipulate fields and step up the tempo without taking reckless risks aligns perfectly with the Sixers’ tactical philosophy. The Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) typically offers a bit more grip and assistance to spin bowlers compared to the hard, bouncy tracks of Perth or Brisbane. Kohli’s exceptional footwork against spin and his ability to work the ball into gaps for ones and twos make him a master on surfaces that demand nuance and patience.
Brisbane Heat
The Brisbane Heat are traditionally defined by “Heat-ball” which is a high-risk, high-reward strategy centered around blistering power-hitters who look to clear the boundary from ball one. While explosive batting leads to spectacular wins, it also results in sudden collapses. The Heat have often lacked a calming, world-class accumulator to hold the innings together when the power-hitters fumble. Kohli would serve as the ultimate insurance policy. He would allow Brisbane’s aggressive openers to attack with complete security, knowing that a master tactician is waiting to control the middle overs. The Gabba is known for true pace, carry and excellent value for shots. Kohli’s traditional cricketing shots would travel beautifully on the fast outfield, giving the Heat a level of consistency they have historically craved.
Although, it is a much awaited step as there are no possible signs at present of Virat Kohli playing in the BBL but the Indian fans are extremely excited for the first match as it is going to happen in India at the Chepauk Stadium in India, for the first time ever in the history of BBL.
