Smriti Mandhana second-highest run-scorer in women’s cricket

Smriti Mandhana surpassed New Zealand’s Suzie Bates to become the second-highest run-scorer in women’s international cricket during India’s opening match against Thailand at the Women’s Asia Cup in Dubai.

The left-handed batter scored 19 runs off 10 balls, including four boundaries, a performance that was sufficient for her to overtake Bates on the all-time run list. Mandhana has now accumulated 10,756 runs across all international formats.

In T20 Internationals, Mandhana has scored 4,557 runs in 172 matches with a batting average of 30.17 and a strike rate of 125.36, boasting one century and 35 half-centuries, making her the second-highest run-scorer in the format.

In One Day Internationals, she is the sixth-highest run-scorer, with 5,411 runs from 120 matches at an average of 47.88, including 14 centuries and 35 half-centuries. In nine Test matches, Mandhana has scored 788 runs in 16 innings at an average of 52.53, with two centuries and five fifties.

She trails only Mithali Raj, her former teammate, who holds the record with 10,868 runs in women’s international cricket. Bates had amassed 10,740 runs, followed by England’s Charlotte Edwards with 10,273 and West Indies’ Stafanie Taylor with 10,007 runs.

During the match, despite an explosive 64-run innings from Shafali Verma off 36 balls, Thailand bowlers Suleeporn Laomi and Sunida Chaturongrattana restricted India to 159 for 9. India had reached 108 for 2 before collapsing to 136 for 7 in five overs.

Suleeporn Laomi took three wickets for 26 runs, while Sunida Chaturongrattana claimed two for 31, contributing to Thailand’s strong bowling display.
