Meerut Mavericks secured victory over Lucknow Falcons in the opening week of the UP T20 League 2026 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, August 19. The win extended Meerut’s winning streak to three consecutive matches in the tournament. Rinku Singh, who captains the Mavericks, played a decisive role in the chase with a match-winning unbeaten knock that proved crucial when rain interrupted play.
Kartik Tyagi, who shares the Mavericks dressing room with Singh after playing alongside him at Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2026, offered high praise for his captain’s finishing credentials. The right-arm pacer’s assessment came after Singh’s explosive batting performance in challenging conditions.
“At the number he goes to bat, the way he performs at the end… if you look across the entire world, he almost comes in the Top 5 batters who come in at this number and dominate the game like this. As long as he is at the crease, we always have that confidence that whatever the situation is, the match can be made for us,” Tyagi was quoted as saying by The News Mill.
“He has that confidence, and so do we. As a player, the amount of hard work he has put in, hardly anyone here has done. The result of that is something he gets, and our team benefits as well,” he added.
Rinku’s match-winning knock in rain-affected chase
Singh’s unbeaten 55 came off 24 deliveries and featured two fours and six sixes. Meerut were chasing 184 and faced a significant challenge when rain arrived during the 17th over. In that rain-interrupted over, bowled by Navneet Kumar, Singh struck 26 runs off five deliveries to keep the chase on track. His aggressive batting ensured Mavericks reached 154 for 6 in 16.5 overs, finishing five runs ahead of the DLS par score before heavy rain halted play.
Tyagi on Singh’s captaincy and team mindset
Tyagi also highlighted the impact of playing under Singh’s captaincy. The Mavericks bowler emphasised how Singh’s mindset of dominating rather than merely winning has influenced the team’s approach across all phases of play.
“Playing under his captaincy gives a lot of confidence. If you look at his attitude, we stay on the ground with this mindset that we just have to dominate. Not just win, but dominate. He thinks that way and motivates us like that. Then when we bowl, our expectations from ourselves are also in that way that we have to go out and dominate,” Tyagi said.
Singh’s T20 International record reflects his development as a finisher at the highest level. He had scored 702 runs across 48 T20 Internationals at an average of 37 with a strike rate of 156, demonstrating his ability to accelerate in pressure situations. His performances in domestic T20 leagues have reinforced his reputation as a match-winner in the lower-middle order.
Singh was recently in action for India during the Zimbabwe tour last month. The left-handed batter scored 37 runs across two innings at a strike rate of 168.18. He is expected to return to action for the Men in Blue when they take on Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series in September at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
