PSL may shift to January in 2027 to avoid clash with IPL

The Pakistan Super League could be moved to January, with its broadcasters pushing for a change in the tournament window. The April-May schedule has reportedly made it difficult to generate advertising revenue because the PSL runs alongside the hugely popular Indian Premier League.

New Delhi: The next season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) could be shifted to January after the media rights holders of the tournament complained about limited revenue from advertising during the April-May window, when the Indian Premier League (IPL) is played.

The 2026 edition of the PSL again clashed with the IPL, and the suggestion to hold the tournament early next year came after a meeting of the PSL Governing Council in London on September 1. According to a PTIo also the owner of a franchise in the league, proposed scheduling the T20 tournament in January-February

The PSL, since its beginning in 2016, has been played in the February-March window, but was moved to the April-May window in 2025 due to ICC events. This year, the PCB was also forced to reschedule the PSL to the same window, where it clashed with the IPL.

PSL owners raise concern over declining interest amid Pakistan’s poor form

PSL franchise owners have expressed concerns about the league’s declining interest, with Pakistan’s disappointing performances across formats. Under the current PSL agreement with the franchises, the eight teams receive 95 per cent of the broadcast revenue from the central revenue pool.

According to thePTIhat the league should start in Karachi, where the winter conditions are comparatively moderate early in the year, before moving the tournament to Punjab and Peshawar as temperatures improve later in the season

Pakistan currently has a clear international window from November through March, with no home or away bilateral series scheduled during that period. Walee Technologies currently holds the PSL’s domestic television and digital rights until 2029, while its international media rights agreement covers the 2026 edition. The company also owns the PSL franchise, Rawalpindiz.
