Michael Neser signs two-year deal to remain with Brisbane Heat until BBL 2027

Michael Neser has committed to the Brisbane Heat on a new two-year contract, tying him to the club through to the end of the 2027-28 season of the Big Bash League. The agreement was confirmed on August 30 and will see the 36-year-old pace bowler return for a seventh season in Heat colours.

Across 105 BBL appearances, Neser has claimed 117 wickets at a bowling average of 24.53, an economy rate of 8.43 and a strike rate of 17.4, with a best return of 4-25. That tally places him equal-ninth on the competition’s all-time wicket-takers list.

“As a player, it’s always been the best thing about the BBL; there is always the chance to make an impact on the game. There’s nothing better than being a Heat player at the Gabba when the ground is packed and the crowd is heaving, and you look up in a key moment and know that everyone is right there with you.” Neser said, as quoted by Cricket.com.au.

What is Neser’s history with Brisbane Heat and the BBL?

Neser first appeared for the Heat in the 2011-12 season, stepping onto the field at the age of 21. He subsequently moved to Adelaide Strikers, spending nine seasons there from 2012-13 to 2020-21 and collecting a title along the way, before making his return to Brisbane in 2021.

That second stint with the Heat has produced some of his finest BBL cricket. He registered a career-best 26 wickets in 2022 as the club reached the final, then contributed 12 wickets in 2023, including the dismissal of Daniel Hughes in the decider as the Heat beat the Sydney Sixers to secure their second championship. Injury and national duty curtailed his involvement in the two seasons that followed, restricting him to just six matches across the last two seasons combined due to a left hamstring problem and Test commitments.

“You look at when the Heat are at their absolute best and (he) is never far away from the action. His presence around the group always helps the players as they strive to be a successful unit,” Hopes said. How does Neser’s availability look given his Test schedule?

Neser’s appearances for the Heat during the season will be shaped by his national commitments. Australia are scheduled to host New Zealand in a Test series across December and January, followed by a tour of India in January and February. Any call-up for either assignment would reduce his availability during those windows. Alongside Neser, Brisbane’s pace attack for the coming season features Xavier Bartlett, Spencer Johnson and Callum Vidler.

The signing brings Brisbane’s contracted roster for the current season to eleven players, with seven spots still to be filled from a pool that includes uncontracted names such as Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Shaheen Shah Afridi.
