Highest successful run chases in T20Is at Hagley Oval
Hagley Oval has never been a ground where enormous totals get run down, which matters a great deal with India set to chase in the opening T20I of their series against New Zealand. The highest successful pursuit in a men’s T20I here remains Pakistan’s 177/3 against Bangladesh, and that was four years ago.
Pakistan reached it with a ball to spare on October 13, 2022, during the tri-series that New Zealand hosted ahead of the T20 World Cup. That tournament accounts for a remarkable share of the ground’s chasing history, with five of the eight successful chases coming inside a fortnight in October of that year.
Only eight teams have chased down a target at the venue in T20I cricket, and the margins tell their own story. Three of those pursuits went into the 19th over or beyond, and New Zealand’s 92/1 against Pakistan in March 2025 is on the list only because the visitors had been dismissed for 91.

Highest successful run chases in domestic T20 cricket at Hagley Oval
The domestic game has produced the one genuinely big chase the ground has seen. Canterbury scored 222/3 in 18.5 overs against Northern Districts in the 2019-20 Super Smash. They won that match by seven wickets with seven balls to spare, and it stands as the only successful chase beyond 200 in any T20 at the venue.
As Canterbury’s home ground, the venue has hosted the Super Smash final on several occasions, with the last two both settled by the team batting second. Northern Brave chased 155 in the 2022-23 decider, reaching 156/3 in 18 overs, and returned in January 2026 to overhaul Canterbury’s 171/5 with 13 balls remaining.
Across all T20 cricket at the ground, chasing sides have generally held the advantage. The venue has seen first-innings totals average around 150 in Super Smash cricket, and the second innings has historically been the easier time to bat under lights.
