Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns has expressed support for former Pakistan captain and Prime Minister Imran Khan amid growing concerns regarding his health and demands for appropriate medical treatment.
In an Instagram story, Cairns endorsed the global cricket community’s appeal, stating that “Imran Khan who like anyone… should be afforded basic human rights… great to see the global cricket community supporting one of its own… and making this a public issue.”

Imran Khan’s health has been the subject of intense scrutiny in Pakistan in recent weeks, with his family members, including his sons, urging proper healthcare for the former cricketer and Prime Minister. The Supreme Court of Pakistan recently ordered his transfer to Islamabad’s Shifa Hospital, but he was instead taken to the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and returned to prison shortly after a check-up. His sisters and sons have accused authorities of violating the court order and demanded that Khan be permitted to consult his personal doctor.
A letter signed by 22 former international cricket
A letter signed by 22 former international cricket captains was sent to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, renewing their request for medical treatment for the former ODI World Cup-winning captain. This followed an earlier letter from 14 captains in February that received no response from the government.
The letter’s signatories include Michael Atherton, Alex Blackwell, Allan Border, Michael Brearley, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Alastair Cook, Michael Gatting, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Lee Germon, Adam Gilchrist, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Clive Lloyd, Arjuna Ranatunga, Andrew Strauss, Dilip Vengsarkar, Steve Waugh and John Wright.
Current Australian captain Pat Cummins also voiced his support, sharing a video from The Grade Cricketer featuring former Australia captain Greg Chappell discussing Khan’s situation. Cummins stated, “Adding my support here to GC and the other former international captains. I hope the court-ordered medical assessment be allowed to run its course, and that family visits continue. I hope Imran Khan is treated with the dignity anyone deserves.”
