Bangladesh sports minister wants BPL to be held every year

Aminul Haque, Bangladesh’s state minister for youth and sports, said on Sunday that they will sit with the Bangladesh Cricket Board to discuss the future of the Bangladesh Premier League, the country’s lone franchise-based T20 tournament.

BCB president Tamim Iqbal earlier announced that they are not ready to start the BPL until they fix issues that had put the tournament’s credibility into question. While BPL franchises welcomed the move taken by the board, it did not go down well with the cricketers, as they were insecure about their future, considering the tournament was one of their major cricket to make sure cricketers are comfortable financially

However, Aminul said a popular tournament like the BPL should take place every year, while adding that he was not aware that the tournament had been postponed by the board when the media drew his attention to the matter.

“I only got to know from you (media) just now, I wasn’t aware BPL will not take place. BPL is a popular tournament for Bangladesh,” Aminul told reporters in Dhaka on Sunday.

“You’re saying the board president presented some logical reasons to you all. I think a tournament like the BPL should be held every year,” he said.

“Why it didn’t happen, we need to discuss. We will obviously monitor in future that this kind of competition takes place regularly,” he concluded.
