India retained their Asian Games gold medals in both the men’s and women’s cricket tournaments, beating arch-rivals Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the finals, respectively.
The Indian men’s team, headed by Shreyas Iyer, qualified for the knockout stage after their quarter-final game against Afghanistan was washed out because of rain.
India then defeated Sri Lanka by 124 runs in the semi-finals before playing against Pakistan in the final on October 3, where half-centuries from Tilak Varma (51 not out) and Abhishek Sharma (61) helped India post an imposing total of 211/6.
While Hasan Nawaz kept his team in with a fighting chance with an innings of 96 off 51, Pakistan could not overhaul India’s score, finishing at 192/6 in their 20 overs.
The Indian women’s team, headed by Harmanpreet Kaur, similarly qualified for the knockout stage. India defeated Bangladesh in the semi-finals before winning against Sri Lanka in the final to win the gold medal in women’s cricket.
