Heino Ferreira and Thando Zama, the Noordheuwel
Heino Ferreira and Thando Zama, the Noordheuwel and St Charles College captains, shook hands late on Friday afternoon after their match on La Rosey Oval at St David’s ended in a draw.
In his welcome address to the teams, St David’s captain Sohail Seonath had urged his fellow skippers to make bold decisions. He might have been reading Ferreira’s mind as the Noordheuwel skipper chose to go for the win instead of settling for a draw early on day two.
On Thursday, Noordheuwel powered their way to 400/8 in their first innings. Juvan Lamont led the way with an imperious 173 from 139 balls, while Logan Swart offered valuable support with a half-century.

Their bowlers then performed splendidly to bowl out St Charles for 242 in the Pietermaritzburg school’s first innings. Malan de Jager, Heinrich Smith, and Heino Ferreira all finished with three wickets apiece.
Ferreira saw an opportunity to go for victory, instead of eating up overs at the crease on Friday. After all, Noordheuwel enjoyed a 158-run lead over the men from KZN on the first innings, so he asked them to follow on.
St Charles rose to the challenge. Owen Willows led the way, tallying a steady 120 from 128 balls, while the opener received strong support from Thando Zama (92) and Caleb Sharp (62).
