The ‘Impact Player’ rule implemented from IPL 2023 has become a major topic of discussion. According to this rule, a team is allowed to bring in a replacement player for one of its final 11 players during a match. This allows for 12 players to play for one team in a match.
Batters Have Gained an Extra Advantage
The Impact Player rule has allowed teams to increase their batting depth. With an extra batter available, players have started to bat more aggressively and fearlessly. However, there are criticisms that this has impacted the roles of bowlers and all-rounders.
Rohit and Virat Have Also Expressed Discontent
Indian cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have raised questions regarding this rule. According to them, this rule affects the balance of the team and diminishes the importance of all-rounders.
BCCI Has Sought Opinions from Franchises
In preparation for IPL 2027, BCCI has sought feedback from all franchises on various cricket-related issues, including the Impact Player rule. According to Cricbuzz, BCCI has sent an official letter to all teams asking them to submit their opinions by August 31.
Preparing to Make Decisions for the Next Season
BCCI stated in the letter that it was decided to gather feedback from franchises on significant cricket topics following discussions at the IPL 2026 captains’ meeting. Based on these suggestions, necessary changes and action plans for the next season will be prepared.
Suggestions Also Sought on Match Management
In addition to the Impact Player rule, BCCI has also sought suggestions from franchises regarding match day management, umpiring, practice sessions, pitch conditions, and issues related to PMOA (Players and Match Officials Area).
BCCI’s Focus on PMOA Security
During the last IPL season, there were incidents of unauthorized access in the PMOA. Following this, BCCI had to issue special guidelines for players, support staff, and team owners. Therefore, this year, more focus is being placed on security issues.
