Bangladesh are all set to make
their first appearance in the World Championship of Legends (WCL). The Tigers
will compete in the tournament under the name Bangladesh Champions.
During a break from training,
Bangladesh Champions all-rounder Nasir Hossain spoke to the media about the
tournament and the team’s preparations. “Alhamdulillah, our preparation
has been good. We’ve been working hard and preparing for several days. Our
target will be to get a good result. If we can play our own game in Dubai,
hopefully the result will also be good,” Nasir said.
Nasir did not feel Bangladesh
would have a clear advantage over the other teams, but he believes their
fitness could help them. “I wouldn’t say we are ahead of the other teams.
There are many good players in the opposition teams as well. In terms of names,
they have some very big and experienced players. We are a relatively young
team, and some of our players are still playing competitive cricket. In that
sense, we may have a slight advantage, especially when it comes to
fitness.”
Nasir also said the team is not putting
Nasir also said the team is not
putting unnecessary pressure on itself. “It’s not that we must perform
well at any cost. As cricketers, wherever we play, we always try to perform
well, especially when we represent Bangladesh. We will definitely try our best
to do well.”
However, when asked about the
team’s target in the tournament, Nasir was clear about what they want. “We
are going there to become champions. T20 cricket is difficult, and you cannot
simply say you will become champions and make it happen. We will definitely try
to do well. As for age, I don’t think it is such a big factor here. Other teams
also have players who are still active. You saw how AB de Villiers played last
year. It won’t be as easy as we might think. There will be many
challenges.”
The tournament will also give
Mahmudullah, Nasir and Rubel a chance to play together again. The trio were
part of the same Bangladesh team at the 2015 ODI World Cup.
Nasir said he is genuinely excited to share
Nasir said he is genuinely
excited to share the dressing room with his former national teammates again. “Of
course, it feels really good. Almost all of us played together for the national
team. During practice, we talk about many things that have now become memories.
I never thought we would play in the same team again. I never expected to play
alongside Riyad bhai and Rubel again. It feels really good. We were all
colleagues and played for the national team. This time too, we are going to
represent our country.”
Nasir also wished the Bangladesh
team taking part in the Asian Games. “There’s not much to say about the
Asian Games. From what I have seen, Bangladesh have sent a good team. Of
course, they will have my best wishes and prayers.”
Shakib Al Hasan was also expected
to play in the Legends tournament, but he will not be part of the Bangladesh
Champions squad.
Nasir admitted that the team will miss
Nasir admitted that the team will
miss the former Bangladesh all-rounder. “Of course, we are missing Shakib
bhai. There’s no question about that. It would definitely have been better if
he were here. I was hoping he would be with us. I don’t know whether he will be
able to join or not. If he were here, it would have been good. Everyone in the
team will miss him.”
Another Bangladesh Champions
player, Ziaur Rahman, also spoke about Shakib. “It would definitely have
been good to have Shakib. But his situation is a little different because there
are political issues involved. He was supposed to be with the team. I don’t
know, that’s something for the management to decide. If he had played, it would
certainly have been good.”
Bangladesh Champions will begin their
WCL campaign against Pakistan on October 3.
