A cricket club is set to celebrate the legacy of one of the game’s most influential figures with a day of special events.
Sussex Cricket will honour the 200th birthday of John Wisden with a tribute during their County Championship match against Surrey on September 8 at The County Ground.
Born in Brighton on September 5, 1826, Wisden played for Sussex from 1845 to 1863, taking 344 wickets and scoring 2,234 runs.

“We’re incredibly proud to be honouring the ‘little wonder’ from September 5th onwards.
“We have a lot planned for the Rothesay County Championship match vs Surrey on September 8 and are looking forward to having our supporters and members join in on the fun.
“We encourage everyone to wear yellow for the day, and we’ll be giving away 200 special edition umbrellas, as well as unique Wisden x Sussex Cricket scorecards on the day, so all cricket fans can take part in this historic celebration and hopefully enjoy a fantastic day of cricket too.”

Best known as the founder of the Wisden
Best known as the founder of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, first published in 1864, Wisden’s influence on the sport extends far beyond the pitch.
Activities will take place from September 5 and run throughout the Surrey match, with Sussex Cricket updating its digital channels in tribute to Wisden.
On September 8, the first 200 fans through the gates will receive a limited edition Sussex Cricket and Wisden branded umbrella, and all fans will receive a commemorative Wisden & Sussex Cricket scorecard.

Wisden’s patented ‘Catapulta’, believed to be the world’s first bowling machine, will be on display at the ground.
Sussex Cricket is encouraging fans to wear yellow to tie in with the Almanack’s signature yellow look.
Schoolchildren will be invited to learn about Wisden’s life and legacy, and the club’s interactive nets at the Sixes venue will be free to use on the day.
Wisden delegates including editor Lawrence Booth and publisher Chris Lane will attend the celebration.
