India to face Japan for the first time in a T20I International Match. X
BCCI and JCA will host a T20I match between India and Japan on September 22, 2026 to celebrate 75 years of their diplomatic relations.

India-Japan diplomatic relations began in 1952 after a peace treaty was signed between the two nation post World War II.

Both of the teams will compete for the Suzuki Cup at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.
A Headstart for the Indian Cricket Team Before the Asian Games 2026
The match between India and Japan will offer the Indian team a valuable opportunity to prepare themselves for the upcoming 20th Asian Games, Japan. Meanwhile, Japan can bring some experience for the team after they face India. There are also diplomatic reasons to host this match. BCCI said, “The match will be the first step of ‘Sport 75’, an initiative that stems from an agreement reached during a summit between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and aims to promote human exchanges and cooperation between India and Japan in the field of sports, taking note of India’s ambition to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036.”
Captain Shreyas Iyer alongside vice-captain Tilak Verma, Sanju Samson and the prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi are among the team to lead. The defending Asian Games champions India won gold in Hangzhou, China. Because of their T2OI ranking they were awarded the medal ahead of Afghanistan in the finals. The result gave them a direct entry in the Asian Games quarterfinals that will be played on September 28, 2026. According to BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikai, the match between India-Japan will give cricket a chance to spread their mark to the world where cricket is minimal.
Saikai said, “The BCCI is delighted to be part of this historic occasion as the Indian and Japanese men’s teams come together for a special T20 International in Japan. This is a significant moment for cricket, as it takes the Indian team to new territory and provides an opportunity to introduce the sport to a wider audience in Japan and East Asia.”
Later he added, “India and Japan share a strong and longstanding relationship and friendship, and we are pleased that cricket will be part of the celebrations marking 75 years of bilateral relations between the two countries, and we thank the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) for its efforts in making this fixture possible.”
The Diplomatic Relations Between India-Japan
For the past 75 years, India and Japan have maintained a formal diplomatic relationship. It all began on April 28, 1952, but goes way back in the past. The cultural andancient relation from Buddhism gave a rendition to their Special Strategic and global Partnership. Then after Post-World War II, a bilateral peace treaty was signed between the two. Then, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru donated an elephant to a zoo called Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, Japan in the year 1949. Such friendly gestures contributed to their relationship. They also signed a Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation in 2008 that assures a transfer of defensive equipment and classified military information.
The Japanese nation is also a major investor and the largest bilateral Official Development Assistance (ODA) donor for India. The bullet train project in India that will run its first fastest train from Mumbai to Ahmedabad was also a collaboration between the two countries. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) helped in the Bilateral trade and made an approximated 27.5 billion dollars in commerce. More collaborations include the Clean Energy Partnership, space missions from Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Japanese Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the initiatives for artificial intelligence.
Now the nations are set to host a cricket match to celebrate their milestones together. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikai said, “The BCCI is delighted to be part of this historic occasion as the Indian and Japanese men’s teams come together for a special T20 International in Japan.” JCA CEO Naoki Miyaji also expressed his gratitude by saying, “This is a significant moment for cricket, as it takes the Indian team to new territory and provides an opportunity to introduce the sport to a wider audience in Japan and East Asia.”
Miyaji welcomes the reigning World Champions to the home of cricket in Japan, which will be a huge step for Japan’s association with India.
