BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla praised Sri Lankan batter Sonal Dinusha on social media. He stated that the youngster reminds him of Sachin Tendulkar after his overall performance in the ongoing Test series against India in August, 2026.
“This Sonal of Srilanka is an amazing player. Looking like Tendulkar. Can be a wonderful test player in international cricket. @OfficialSLC” Shukla tweeted. This tweet of Shukla came after the Sri Lankan batter fought lonely against India in both of the Tests in the ongoing Test series which is a part of the ICC World Test Championship.
Sonal Dinusha has been the standout performer for Sri Lanka in the 2026 Test series against India. Dinusha scored his maiden Test century in the first innings in Galle, where he scored 100 runs off 168 balls, batting at No. 6 and again fought as a lone warrior with a strong 84 runs off 128 balls in the second innings. He again rescued the Lankan side from a top-order collapse by scoring another century (103 runs off 162 balls), while coming on to bat at No. 7 in the first innings in Colombo. Dinusha continued his brilliant run, scoring a strong 60 runs which helped the Lankans stand strong against the Indian bowling attack on Day 5 of the second innings.

Sonal Dinusha made his Test debut against Bangladesh on the 25th of June, 2025. Till now, he has played exclusively in Test cricket. Across 5 Test matches, he has an average of 77.00+ with 2 centuries and 2 half-centuries. In domestic cricket, he represents Colombo Cricket Club in major club tournaments and the Dambulla Sixers in the Lanka Premier League (LPL). Dinusha became only the fifth player in cricket history to record four consecutive 50+ scores in his first four Test innings against India and also is the third Sri Lankan batter ever to record 50-plus scores in all four innings of a two-match Test series, joining the legendary Kumar Sangakkara and Dimuth Karunaratne.
Colombo Test on the verge of a draw
The second Test match between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo is leaning heavily toward a draw as a result of the resilient batting from the Lankans in their second innings, combined with the rain delays earlier in the match. This has successfully stalled India’s one-sided dominance in the series through a series sweep. Sri Lanka are currently leading by 148 runs in the second session of Day 5 during their follow-on.
